Graphics designers today are rediscovering the beauty and technical advantages offered by traditional woodcut and wood-engraved artwork. This medium of reproduction, brought to perfection over several centuries, reached its peak in the nineteenth century, only to be superseded by half-tone reproduction of photographs in the twentieth century. Most people, designers especially – now that this engraved picture material is no longer produced and is becoming increasingly hard to find – recognize once more how adaptable it is to a wide variety of projects, and how well it complements typography, electronic publishing, and desktop publishing.
These images of six of the "big" composers, Bach, Beethoven, Brahms, Handel, Haydn, & Mozart, represent beautifully engraved examples of this traditional art-form.
The images were scanned, touched up, and saved in TIFF format, easily imported directly into most layout programs and word processors.
The images are copyright-free and can be used without guilt.
What do I ask? (you ask...)
Send me a postcard. Tell me what you think of the images, what you used them for, and (if possible) a sample of your work. I will return the favour and send you a return card. (You could call this postcard-ware...)
If you like what you see, I have tons more - fancy, fanciful, artsy, fartsy, cute, comical - you name it -- all related to music.
